We are getting very good numbers on the two players above due to their opponents in this group. Hideki is playing very good golf over his past 5 rounds while Morikawa is on the verge of a breakout round. Both players hit their iron very well in round 1 with Hideki gaining 1.96 strokes and Morikawa gaining 3.43 strokes. The putter continues to be unconscious for Hideki over his past five rounds. When the irons and putter are clicking for him he becomes very dangerous as shown over his last five rounds. Morikawa had been struggling with his irons and today’s round could be the start of a run if he can find the putter. Both players have early morning tee times in round 2. The am overall was .90 strokes better than the pm.
The Opponents
This isn’t going to be a cakewalk most likely providing a sweat through the day. In order to get those numbers on Hideki and Colin the opponents need to be worthy. Rory McIlroy has an am tee time which could benefit his game which has been in shambles. Viktor Hovland didn’t take advantage of his early tee time in round one. He was never a threat as his putter was ice cold. Schauffele and Scheffler are the two big opponents. Neither played stellar golf in round one and will be teeing it up in the afternoon for round 2. Scottie lost strokes on approach and his off the tee game struggled in round one. Schauffele wasn’t much better with his irons or putter but did play well off the tee. We won’t see much wind but the am conditions are much better than the pm. With winds around 10mph and a course that is showing some teeth it could be a struggle for the pm players.
I am more than willing to throw a unit each on Hideki and Morikawa at their prices. I really like their ball striking numbers, there current form and the morning conditions.
