Thursday Night Football Sports Betting Plays of the Day: NFC South
Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Atlanta Falcons
The Line: Falcons -1.5
The Total: 43.5
Thursday Night Football is no longer the throwaway game it once was, and we have a great one in Atlanta. Tonight, we have a NFC South battle as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head to Atlanta to take on the Falcons.
At 3-1, the Bucs currently control the division, but the 2-2 Falcons could snatch that from them with a win tonight.
Bucs Hot Start in the NFC South
Tampa Bay has looked stellar this season outside of the 26-7 loss at home to the Denver Broncos. It’s the only spot this season where the Bucs struggled to put up points.
Baker Mayfield is in his eighth season, and he’s never played better. He’s making smart decisions in the pocket, and comparing his stat line to previous seasons, it doesn’t even look like the same quarterback. Overall, Tampa Bay’s defense has played well, but they’re posting mediocre numbers. If the Bucs D can tighten up, they could be a real threat in the NFC.
Falcons Defensive Issues
The Falcons are a team that had a whole new look coming into the season. While they certainly are playing better than they were last season, there’s still plenty of room for improvement on both sides of the ball. Atlanta is playing competitive football against strong teams, but they’ve been outscored by 10 points by their opponents.
No one knew what to expect from the 36-year-old Kirk Cousins, coming off an Achilles injury, but he’s holding his own. The slight regression in his play is in line with the level of talent around him. This division is Tampa Bay’s to lose. However, if Atlanta can shore things up on the defense, Cousins gives them a real shot to make the playoffs.
Betting Buccaneers @ Falcons
The Bucs would likely be favored in this NFC South battle if they didn’t have 14 players on the injury report. NT Vita Vea, Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and OT Luke Goedeke are all out for this game.
For that reason, bettors should avoid Tampa Bay player props preflop.
The head-to-head data between these teams doesn’t hold much value considering how different this Atlanta team looks.. Last season these teams split their set, with the away team winning and covering both games.
The injuries are enough to keep smart money off the over, but not the underdog. Mayfield has his work cut out for him, but his defense should make his job manageable.
The NFC South Plays:
- Tampa Bay Moneyline (+105)
- SGP: Baker Mayfield Over 9.5 Rushing Yards & Over 34.5 Total Points (+120)
