The NBA season tips off tonight and I’m really excited about all the upcoming action! We only have two games to start us off tonight before a monster slate on Wednesday night. Let’s dive right in and find the best pick to start our season profitable.
Minnesota Timberwolves vs Los Angeles Lakers
Anyone who reads my columns or follows my work knows that I have an absolute disdain for the Lakers. However, the disdain isn’t enough for me to want to fade this team on opening night.
The Minnesota Timberwolves do have the better roster. The Timberwolves have more depth and have finally found the experience needed to make them a championship-contending team. The Timberwolves pushed in their chips for this season by trading Karl Anthony Towns for Julius Randle and Donte Divincenzo.
TWolves made a huge move
The addition of Julius Randle does help this Timberwolves team. Randle can be an excellent defender when he tries, which unfortunately isn’t very often. Let’s see if Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch can convince Randle to give solid effort night in and night out on the defensive end.
Man, I want to fade the Lakers so bad! I want the Lakers to lose this game so bad! However, the Lakers looked like a modern team in preseason, running sets that played to the strength of their team. New head coach JJ Reddick and LeBron James seem to be on the same page. I think this Lakers team is going to be a force on the offensive end of the ball.
However, it remains to be seen, if Reddick will convince James to put in the effort on the defensive end. I’m surprised that James gets a pass from so many fans for his lazy defense. This was an issue with the team and sometimes I think that James’ defensive laziness trickles down and we see a team that’s only focused on scoring.
Game Breakdown
The Lakers should be crisp on the offensive end in the opener. However, I don’t expect them to have their defensive rotations dialed in yet. I expect a high-powered Minnesota team to be able to take advantage of this. So while I would love to sit here and tell you the best pick of the game is to take the Timberwolves to win. Nevertheless, the reality is that the best way to approach this game is the over.
Teams do go over more often early in the season when they are well rested and there aren’t any injuries.
We know that in the NBA, good offense will always beat good defense and that will be the case in a high-paced game tonight. I think the Lakers offense will look crisp and exciting, however, they’re not going to have the temerity or willpower to stop the Timberwolves.
