Seattle Seahawks vs Detroit Lions

The Seattle Seahawks take their undefeated record on the road to Detroit for a Monday night showdown. The Lions will look to make a statement and keep pace in a loaded NFC North division. When these two teams take the field, who will be the winning NFL pick?

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks have won all three of their games so far but have had the easiest schedule in the NFL. Seattle opened the season taking on a rookie quarterback at home when they defeated Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos. They followed it up by traveling to face the Patriots, where they were able to squeak out a win. Then, they headed back home to face a Miami team who is without a starting quarterback. However, you can only beat whoever’s in front of you and the Seahawks have done just that.

More concerns for Seattle besides the fact that they have beaten inferior competition is the injuries on the defensive side of the ball. The Seahawks are missing four members of their starting lineup, which could affect their ability to win at the line of scrimmage. That doesn’t bode well going against a Detroit team with one of the best offensive lines in football. Will head coach Mike Macdonald be able to scheme up defenses that will hide his lack of depth on the defense right now?

The Seahawks offense looks good under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. QB Geno Smith is moving the ball around the field and the Seahawks have plenty of weapons. You can’t just key on one man. The Seahawks have different players who have excelled in each one of the wins. The Seahawks are going to take what the defense gives them. We will have to see who the Lions key on to find out who Geno Smith will target.

Detroit Lions

The Lions are the favorite of some to make the Super Bowl this season on the strength to win at the line of scrimmage. Detroit has one of the best offensive lines in the league, although they will be weaker with center Frank Ragnow sitting this one out due to injury. Still, the Lions are going to beat you in the trenches with the hard-nose style of football they play under head coach Dan Campbell.

Detroit opened its season with an overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams, they then fell short on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Week 3, they traveled to Arizona and got a solid win over the Cardinals last week.

While the Lions have played well so far this season, they’re going to need to up their level of play to keep pace and the high-powered NFC North. Tonight marks an opportunity for them to make a statement in prime time against a team that is playing well.

Key to the Game

Detroit offensive line vs Seattle defensive line

Will the Detroit Lions be able to take advantage of the weakened Seahawks defensive line? How will they operate without the leader of their line, center Frank Ragnow missing this game? Seahawks coach and defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald has been excellent in scheming so far this season. Will he devise a plan to slow down Detroit quarterback Jared Goff and the rest of the Lions offense? If the Lions are able to establish the run and protect Goff, they should cruise to an easy victory. If the Seahawks can confuse Goff and shut down the run, they’re in a great position for their high-powered offense to win on the road.

The Monday Night Football Showdown Pick

This is a tough matchup because I do worry that the Seahawks value has been over-inflated by wins over weaker teams. However, looking at this from a football standpoint, their offense should be able to keep pace with Detroit’s offense. The Seahawks have a variety of options when it comes to their offensive game plan. Furthermore, they have many counters at the Lions’ attempts to take one player away. The Lions will be more one-dimensional with their reliance on WR Amon-Ra St. Brown.

I believe this will be a close, low-scoring game. I like the Seahawks to cover the spread and I believe the under is a good bet as well. Detroit has gone under in all three games this season and this should be another game where the defenses look robust. Take the Seahawks to cover in a low-scoring game.
