Can I bet on sports in California?
No, you still cannot legally bet on sports in the state of California. Two things are at play. One, California voters overwhelmingly voted against legalizing any form of sports betting in 2022. Two, there are 110 Native American Tribes in the state, and they hold the most power as to whether or not sports betting will be legal.
When can I bet on sports in California?
There is no timeline for legal sports betting in the state of California. Over 80% of California voters did not want to legalize sports betting in California.
On top of that, the 110 tribes will have the final say. Some tribal leaders will likely push to legalize online sports betting but the issue will not be up for debate until voting on the subject resumes in 2026.
What does the future look like for legal sports betting in California?
Legalizing sports betting in California is extremely complex. State, county, city and tribal politics are involved and that is never a good thing for rapid advancement.
One thing you can bet on in California is horse racing. Santa Anita Racetrack, located about seven miles from Pasadena, hosts the Breeders Cup, which is unofficially the fourth major race of the “Grand Slam”.
While it’s not looking good, California voters could have legal sports betting on the ballot if the gaming lobby can gain enough signatures.
