This Week in Sports Betting 10-16-24: College Football Playoff

We had a wild week in the NFL and in the world of college football. I have plenty to talk about so don’t forget to get to the bottom of my article for a free betting selection.

The 12-Team College Football Playoff is Going to be a Hit

With the transfer portal and the new NIL rules, the 12-team playoff is set up for success. The top teams are no longer as dominant as the coaches get less time with players. Long gone are the days of college teams stacking their rosters so well that even their backups can win outright.

The gap between number one and number 10 has never been smaller. College football has a huge recipe for success that it’s cooking up with the 12-team College playoff. This is the perfect year to implement it.

Trades Trades and More Trades

I wrote last week about the New York Jets firing of head coach Robert Saleh and the Jets have stayed on top of the new cycle again this week. Unfortunately for Jets fans, they are once again on top of the news cycle after a loss.

The Buffalo Bills proved that they are still the top dogs in the AFC East with a gritty win over the Jets on Monday Night Football. New York responded by acquiring future Hall of Fame wide receiver Davante Adams.

Give credit to the Jets for going all-in and trying to win now. But this writer wonders if the Jets are simply delusional about their playoff prospects with a 40 year-old quarterback not named Tom Brady.

Yes, Rodgers has been good. However, Josh Allen showed that he is still leaps and bounds ahead of Rodgers. The move for Adams didn’t cost them too much in draft capital, however, the salary cap implications are huge for a receiver who might have his best years behind him.

The Jets are no doubt better after this trade, yet I don’t think it’s going to be enough to get them over the hump. Give them credit for trying to win now, but when they eventually tear down this version of the team, this trade might make their rebuild a little bit tougher.

The Bills

Amari Cooper is now a member of the Buffalo Bills. While I’m not a huge fan of Cooper, he makes this team better. Amari Cooper is a strong route runner and this will open up the game plan for the Bills other receivers. Cooper will fill the role that Curtis Samuel was supposed to do. Samuel has been a huge disappointment this season.

So while the Jets made their move, the Bills countered with a move that was just as strong. I personally like Adams better than Cooper. However, with how far the Bills already were ahead of the Jets, especially at the QB position, this move has made it tough for the Jets to overtake the top dogs in the AFC East.

My Favorite Bet for Week 7

The Indianapolis Colts are at home taking on the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins have been one of the worst teams in football since losing starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins also overpaid Tua, which means that they lost depth at other positions, particularly on the defensive line.

This new Dolphins team is weak on defense, and without Tua in the lineup they can’t get it done on offense either. I have concerns that Miami head coach Mike McDaniels, as awesome as he is at dialing up a play design, is just a glorified play-caller masquerading as a head coach. I don’t think McDaniels is cut out to be the head man of an organization, rather he should stay in his quarterback room, dialing up plays, and letting a man with a stronger personality lead the team.

Indianapolis has one of the best offensive lines in football and will take advantage of the depleted Miami defensive line. The Colts are also much better at home. I think this line should be five points, so we’re getting a huge value with the Colts only laying three. Take advantage of a Miami team that lacks good quarterback play and does not have the right man as head coach.

Take the Colts -3.

Best Bet

Indianapolis Colts -3 (-115)
