The Game: Pittsburgh at Boston College
The Line: BC -4.5
The Pitt Panthers travel to Chestnut Hill, MA to face Boston College on Saturday.
Eagles
Boston College has won two of their last three games. They’ve seen starting QB Thomas Castellanos enter the transfer portal after being benched in the Eagles win over Syracuse. Junior Grayson James will get the start against the Panthers. He played solidly vs SMU and UNC in the last two weeks since Castellanos announced his intentions.
James is a transfer from FIU where he put up a 59 % completion rate. Interceptions were an issue while at FIU, but in his only two starts this year at BC has thrown 2 touchdowns to only 1 interception and seems to have sparked this Eagle offense. They’ve scored just under 35 points per game with him under center, which is over 10 points a game better than Castellanos.
Panthers
Pitt is having QB issues of its own due to injury. Three QBs had more than six passing attempts in a 37-9 rout at the hands of the Louisville Cardinals last week. The Panthers have lost four straight games after starting the season 7-0. In the loss to Louisville, their nine points all came in the second half after the Cardinals had amounted to a large lead. Pat Narduzzi is a very good coach, but he hasn’t been able to halt the skid.
Key Matchup
Boston College has given up some points of late, but this Pitt offense in its current state, may provide the remedy they need. Offensively, to no one’s surprise, BC likes to rely on the rushing game. While Castellanos played a part in that, interestingly they have averaged 240.3 rushing yards per game since his departure. That’s up from their season average of 168.2. I expect BC to control the ground game and do just enough on defense against a run-down Pitt offense to get the job done. I’m taking the BC Eagles, and laying the 4.5.
Best Bet: BC -4.5
