The Pitt Panthers host the Kent State Golden Flashes in Acrisure Stadium on Saturday.
Golden Flashes: Not Good
Kent State is coming off a 1-11 campaign and were essentially the worst team in college football.I really don’t see much improvement in the roster this year. The Golden Flashes do have a solid wide receiver room, but have no one to throw them the ball. There appears to be a quarterback competition.
To add insult to injury, their number one running back Gavin Garcia will miss the whole season. Now, this team may be better than last year’s squad, but that’s not saying much.
Panthers: Change on Offense
Pitt had a dismal 2023 season but I expect the Panthers to bounce back. They bring in new offensive coordinator Kade Bell from Western Carolina. Bell has always had a great offense at every stop in his career. He likes to push the tempo, which is a huge change from last season, where the offense was abysmal and slow.
Today, the Panthers announced that Eli Holstein will start at QB on Saturday while Nate Yarnell will still see game action.
Pitt returns a good back field led by Rodney Hammond. They have a nice receiving corps led by Konata Mumpfield.
Kade has also brought in two really good offensive transfers from Western Carolina. Desmond Reid, who had 900 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns last year, and Raphael Williams Jr, who racked up 1,617 yards and 15 touchdowns two years ago.
Finally, the Panthers also have an under the radar stud tight end in Gavin Barthelew. While Pitt’s defense is nothing to write home about. It’s still an average ACC defense that Kent State shouldn’t be able to score more than 14 points on.
With the Panthers snapping the ball every 15 seconds against a bad defense they should score into the 40’s on Saturday.
