The NFC East will bring some incredibly intriguing matchups. There’s plenty of ambiguity, as every team within the division has concerns entering the season. The sportsbooks think the Eagles are a clear favorite to take the division, but not so fast. Given how they closed out last year, smart money will look elsewhere for a NFC East division winner.
Washington Commanders: Rookie QB Brings Hope to DC
Looking to go worst to first is the Washington Commanders. Massive changes have come to this organization. For one thing, after drafting quarterback Jayden Daniels with the number two overall pick in the 2024 draft, DC sports fans have something to be excited about for the first time in a long time.
The internal changes of the organization seem to be having an effect. In fact, many believe the Commanders have picked up the next Lamar Jackson. Given the volatile nature of the teams within this division, the Commanders have a legitimate chance of dethroning the Cowboys as NFC East Champions. While I wouldn’t put a full unit — or even half a unit — on it, the odds being offered make it with a sprinkle.
The Plays:
NFC East Division Champion: Washington Commanders (+1100) .25 unit
Washington will be competitive within the division. This means a safer bet, that is worth at least a unit, is their win total within the NFC East.
Washington Commanders Over 2.5 Division Wins (+100)
Dallas Cowboys: Super Bowl Window Closing
The Dallas Cowboys look to retain their division title, but that may be a difficult task given the turmoil caused by Dak Prescott’s contract negotiation. This team is loaded with talent, but they still have not been able to even reach the NFC Championship game since 1995.
Looking at what’s on the field, this season may be the Cowboys’ best chance at winning a Super Bowl. They have everything they need to win. Dallas has elite edge rushers and a very good secondary when Trevon Diggs returns from ACL rehab. They also have a top-10 offensive line and one of the best wide receivers in the league in Cee Dee Lamb.
But as history has shown us, it’s hard to win a championship when your quarterback is eating up so much payroll and his name isn’t Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes.
This team has shown improvement year over year, but the competition within the conference remains too tough for them.
All futures offered on this team are too tight to call. Given the history this franchise has of imploding, I’m abstaining from taking any long-term action on America’s team.
The Play: Pass
Philadelphia Eagles: Saquon Barkley To The Rescue
The Eagles are the betting favorite to win the NFC East at a -120 price. Philadelphia made some great additions this offseason to help bolster their Super Bowl odds (+1300).
Signing running back Saquon Barkley was one of the only ways they could upgrade from D’Andre Swift. Losing Jason Kelce could also affect the run game, making this pickup that much more important.
Cam Jurgens has been given the responsibilities of Jason Kelce on the offensive line, but it remains to be seen if he will have the same success in the tush push.
As ridiculous as it is, that play contributed greatly to Philadelphia’s successes last season. The ability to pick up multiple yards every time they ran the Brotherly Shove meant they were starting series 1st and 8. If they reached 4th down and were within two yards, they were running that play and picking up the first down over ninety percent of the time.
Despite the tush push, Saquon Barkley should be printing money for bettors. He was incredible in New York, and with the offensive line he’ll be running behind in Philly he should have a monster season. Whatever Barkley’s rushing total is Week 1, take the over, as it’s likely to be the lowest we’ll see all season.
The Play:
Most Regular Season Rushing Yards: Saquon Barkley (+950)
New York Giants: No Light at the End of The Tunnel
Last and certainly least is the New York Giants. The only thing this team had going for them last year was the aforementioned Barkley; without him, there is nothing exciting about these New York Football Giants.
Barkley was replaced by Devin Singletary, a solid back in his own right, but given what the rest of that offensive line looks like, Singletary should be on the IL by Week 5. Don’t be surprised if Daniel Jones finishes the season with more rushing yards than Singletary.
No matter how optimistic one is, it’s almost impossible to find a bright spot for this team. Given how high the ceiling is for their competition within the division, the Giants are a frontrunner for the first pick in next year’s draft.
The Play:
Worst Regular Season Record: New York Giants (+1000)
NFC East Futures Betting Recap:
Washington Commanders Over 2.5 Division Wins (+100)
Washington Commanders NFC East Division Champion (+1100) .25 unit
Saquon Barkley Most Regular Season Rushing Yards (+950)
New York Giants Worst Regular Season Record (+1000)
